Introduction to StumbleUpon
In this first lesson I shall be introducing you to StumbleUpon for those that are not already familiar with it, and explaining how it drives traffic from the point of view of a webmaster. What I am hoping to achieve with this lesson is to show you the real power of StumbleUpon – how it can deliver truly viral traffic in huge amounts and how that can be directed towards brand new sites and sites in highly competitive niches.

What is StumbleUpon?
StumbleUpon is one of the largest social networking site on the internet (find another social site on Social Networking Directory)> StumbleUpon is essentially a “discovery tool” – it is a toolbar that sits in your browser of choice and allows the user to hit a button, the Stumble button, and be shown a website that the system thinks you are going to like. How does it know what you like? Well that’s the clever part you see…

When you first install the toolbar you’ll be asked to select topics that you are interested in and whenever you Stumble you can click a “thumbs up” button on pages that you like. Over time, the StumbleUpon algorithm learns the kinds of pages that you like and the pages that get served to you become more and more targeted to your individual preferences.
Those are the essentials of StumbleUpon from the perspective of the user but that’s not what this course is about – this course will teach you how you can leverage StumbleUpon to send traffic to your website.

How StumbleUpon Delivers Traffic
StumbleUpon has a database of web pages, images, videos and other content that have all been submitted by users. When other users hit the Stumble button, they are served a relevant page from the database. The key point to note here is that a page only gets into the database because a user submitted it.
Here is where it gets interesting: When a new page (I use the word page but this can refer to any kind of submission such as an image or video) is submitted to the database StumbleUpon gives it a little bit of initial exposure and from that point on it is all up to the users. As the page is served up to StumbleUpon users those people who like the page will click the thumbs up button and that tells StumbleUpon that the page is popular so it sends it to some more people.
For you to get traffic from StumbleUpon you need to get your pages into their database and you need to make sure that the page is going to appeal to StumbleUpon users because without those vital thumbs up votes, traffic will be small.

StumbleUpon Traffic is Viral
When a user clicks the thumbs up button this sends a message to StumbleUpon that the page is popular so it sends it out to more people. The more people that give it the thumbs up vote, the more people see it – meaning that even more people have the potential to thumb it up and so on it goes. This is how content can go viral – if a page is very good and appeals to the StumbleUpon audience, it will receive many thumbs up votes which sends floods of traffic to the page.
Its a case of the rich getting richer because the more popular the page, the more people StumbleUpon continues to send it to which gives it even more chance to get popular. It has the potential to have a massive snowball effect!
